President's Message
My apologies to you, March didn't go so well. First, it was the parking lot
repairs. Coordinating with the contractor didn't go a smoothly as planned -
he had conflicts, I had conflicts. The disruption will not take place on April
8, weather permitting. Whew! Second, it is court 1, which was recently resurfaced
last September. On March 7, I determined it was no longer safe. The new matting
applied to the court has warped all over, creating a for sure, accident ready
to happen scenerio. I've written the contractor and manufacturer certified mail,
return receipt, outlining my consternation, requesting as early a fix as possible.
Weather is a factor when dealing with this mat, but it hasn't been in great
shape since it was applied. Hopefully, it will be returned to service in April,
but I have no date or plan in place as I write. Keep your fingers crossed with
me and remain positive. In all fairness, the contractor has stopped by at least
twice during the winter to check on things. I'm confident he will follow through;
it's just the timing that is irking me. The USTANORCAL leagues are in full swing.
The club has fielded 8 teams, all enthusiastic about coming in #1, maybe in
the Nationals, too. Good luck. The baby pool will be heated starting April 15,
when children's swim lessons resume. The snack bar will open May 1, or slightly
before if the weather is cooperating. Cordially, Oakland Hills Tennis Club,

Spring is upon us and the events are heating up. Look for two exciting events
coming in May.
Our annual CINCO DE MAYO FIESTA is on Saturday, May 3rd. We will have food,
drinks and entertainment! We've lined up Tequila Grill of San Leandro to prepare
an authentic Mexican dinner. Geraldo Rivera of Tequila Grill will also be preparing
and serving his famous margaritas. In addition to a great Mexican meal and delicious
margaritas, we have some fabulous entertainment. Alison Hurwitz of Second Glance
Dance and her partner, Eldon Bryce (our Ballroom Dance instructors) will perform
two exciting choreographed routines, plus teach a lesson on a fun and festive
Latin dance. This should be a fun evening. Invite your friends. The sign-up
sheet will go up in the lobby in early April, but you can call me at 531-3300,
x24 or email me at rtcortesi@sbcglobal.net and I'll be happy to sign you up.
Please, no cancellations after April 28th.
Our next May event is a first…a SPRING WINE TASTING & ART SHOW on Saturday,
May 17th from 5-7pm. Our Fall Wine Tasting Reception has been so popular, we
are doing one in the spring. At this tasting we will focus on white wines and
light reds - rosés and pinot noirs. You will be able to purchase wines at a
significant discount from various vintners. Also available for tasting will
be Silver Tree Olive Oil imported from Turkey. In additional to tasting wines
and olive oil, hors d'oeuvrers catered by Rick & Ann's will be served and a
guitarist will provide entertainment. We will also have an art show featuring
the work of members and staff. (More information on the artists will be available
in the May newsletter.) This will be a wonderful event. The sign-up sheet will
go up in the lobby in April, but you can call me at 531-3300, x24 or email me
at rtcortesi@sbcglobal.net and I'll sign you up. Please, no cancellations after
May 5th.
Look for all 2008 social events elsewhere in this newsletter so you can mark

The summer junior tennis camp registration is well underway. Brochures are available
at the front desk or I can mail one to you directly. This camp is primarily
designed for beginners to intermediate level players. Kids ages 6 to 15 can
come out and enjoy the afternoon activities while meeting new friends on the
courts. Classes meet daily from10:30 to 2:00pm. We have an extended camp that
meets from 2:30 to 4:30 for those kids who want to stay and hit more tennis
balls. This camp is a great way to introduce tennis to kids as the daily schedule
allows for a more complete learning experience.
The cost for a two week session is $350. One week sessions are available for
those who can't fit a two week session into their busy summer schedules. If
your child tends to hang out in front of the computer all day, this is a great
way to get them outside and get physical.
Session 1: June 16- June 27
Session 2: June 30- July 11
Session 3: July 14- July 25
Session 4: July 28- Aug 8
Session 5 Aug 11- Aug 22
I am now teaching private tennis lessons after a two month layoff due to eye
surgeries. I am fine and able to take new students as some time slots have opened
up. If you have wanted to take a lesson with either myself or Bill Merida, please
call me (262-9955) or email me at jerryconrad27@yahoo.com and we will try to
take care of your tennis needs.

David Blaschka, Director
I would like to begin with my thank yous. Thank you to Val Collins for the support
and training over the past 8 years. Thank you to Jim Thompson for the opportunity
to be the new Director of Fitness and Massage. And Thank You to all my clients
and the members which gave me their encouragement and support as a PT/CMT over
the years and for their hopes and well wishes towards this next step in my career.
As the transition continues, I would like to ask you, the members, for your
patience and understanding. There are always a few learning curves and I will
attack them with strength and persistence. Also in this transition I am looking
for new Personal Trainers. I will not do it alone and I will welcome new staff
to the OHTC family. With one exception, all the equipment is working properly.
If there is a problem, please be thorough in presenting the problems to the
staff. Please leave name and phone number, the problem in as much detail as
possible as it makes it easier to relay the correct information when we contact
the service department.
As of the printing date of this newsletter, the drawer in the Fitness Room containing
the workout programs has been cleaned out and updated with a new filing system.
As spring approaches and the season turns, your current workout might need a
little change too. To jump start your winter blues, try a new and energetic
workout program to achieve your fitness goals. Personal Training is $70 for
60min and $50 for 30min. Please contact the Fitness Department at 531-3300 ext.
12.

Aerobics
Luciana Fair, Director
At last, lighter nights are here, and warmer days are on their way. Time to
come out of hibernation and lighten up. Perhaps adding variety to your workouts,
will put a spring to your step.
Hit the Weights and Get Smarter! That's right, several recent studies have determined
that increased fitness levels actually reduce the decline of brain density matter
as one ages! Further, programs that include both cardio and strength training
have been shown to be more effective than either done alone. "The brain of older
adults benefit more from exercise than do those of younger adults, possibly
because they have more to gain."
Want the secret to great abs? It never fails. As spring approaches people start
thinking about getting in shape for summer. And every year the number one thing
I'm asked is "How can I get great abs?" You have probably heard that spot reducing
is a myth, but most people still train as if it is true. Doing crunches will
not magically make your waist shrink. Only a drop in body fat will do that for
you. So what is the secret to great abs? Instead of endless crunches, the secret
is a winning combination of cardio, resistance training and proper eating. Cardio
exercise is all about maintaining an effective level of intensity. This doesn't
mean that you should be out of breath or gasping for air, it does mean that
you need to push yourself. Resistance training means working your major muscle
groups against resistance in a way that stimulates your metabolism. The key
here is to find the right intensity and to keep each muscle group guessing.
What kind of shape is your diet? If your diet is out of control then your abs
will be too. You can't trim your waist without trimming the junk out of your
diet, regardless of how hard you work out.Keep an eye especially on refined
sugar found in soft drinks, blended coffee drinks, cookies, cakes, packaged
snacks and other sweet treats. Processed fat is another monster. Eat more frequently
to prevent your metabolism to "crush". Stick with eating small meals every few
hours.Do you want to flatten and sculpt your waist in time for summer this year?
All you have to do is decide that you really want it. Commit to yourself, you
deserve it. Fit Play News: The present session will end April 23. We might be
offering a following short session starting in May. More news coming in the
next month newsletter. Keep Fit and Healthy!
