President's Message
If you didn't attend our September Luau you missed a great show. The hula troupe,
including Kristen Low (front desk staff), were incredible; the sunset was incredible;
the food was incredible; and, I had a really good time. Great job, Rosina! November
1 is our Fall wine tasting. Rosina and I met with our supplier earlier and the
offerings will prove to be worthwhile. This event is limited to 90 and has been
filled since its inception. If you want to get on board sign up immediately.
Member Rich Wood (Wood Tavern) will do the catering, again; and this is a great
opportunity to buy outstanding wines at exceptional prices. See you there!
On September 28 David and Soo Choi will close the snack bar for the season.
I'm sure you join me in thanking them for outstanding food and service. Can't
wait for May to come around again, when they reopen.
Our satellite system finally pooped out. Like all things electronic, a simple
replacement wasn't in the cards. The new system being installed will support
flat screen HDTV, which I hope to provide in February 2009.
TV wasn't the only hit we got last month, the water heater for the family bathrooms
had to be replaced, too. Luckily, we were without hot water for only a couple
of hours.
We're stumped and we need your help. There is a terrible smell that periodically
arises at the pool area. We've had PG&E out to inspect our gas lines, which
proved OK. We've checked the pool house for any decaying animal - no luck. We've
pulled out equipment and materials to no avail. If you experience a foul smell
please report it immediately; we're intent on getting to the bottom of this
vexing problem.
Tennis leagues are ramping up, again. If you want to play, give Rosina a call
and she will point you to the right team captain.
By the way, Rosina will be heading to surgery for a hip replacement on November
11. She'll be out of commission for about 6 week after, but she is promising
to make a show to any social events, crutches and all. Wish her luck along with
the rest of us. Cordially, Oakland Hills Tennis Club, Inc. Jim Thompson, President

The after school junior tennis program is off to a wonderful start. We have
over sixty kids involved ranging in skills from beginner to varsity high school.
I have talked to other coaches at the various clubs and it appears that OHTC
has one of the largest active junior programs in the East Bay. If your child
is interested in learning tennis, please give me a call at 262-9955 or email
me at jerryconrad27@yahoo.com for information.
Perhaps the best part of my job description is watching juniors start as beginner
tennis players and over time become highly skilled. Many of our juniors have
gone on to play at the local high schools and some have come full circle by
helping me teach the new generation of students. I can thank Jennifer Daugherty,
Kate Ghidinelli, Andrew Almeida,Ian Barry, Manisha Manmohan, Rajiv Manmohan,
Kate Hancock, Camille Koue, Jordan Brunel, Josh Varinsky, Jon Chao, Steve Chao,
Austin Thompson, Sheila McCracken, Reika McCracken, Sidney Matthews, Carly Lee,
Paul Baranano, Nick Yee, Eddie Hill, Harry Kadison, Jessie Abelson and Kara
Abelson and many more who have helped me develop this program into what it is
today. Jerry Conrad Oakland Hills Head Pro

Massage Messages
Val Collins, Director
The fall season brings comfort and peace. Why not comfort the body, mind,
and soul with a relaxing massage. Please let the front desk know of the modality
of your choice and the duration of the massage.
Our Massage Therapist Kerry was promoted last month. Here are a few quotes from
his clients; "I enjoyed his pressure and his technique", another, "A massage
is a great treat after a good workout and with a good therapist that can get
to some tricky aches." One more; "I've had massages from Pebble Beach to Piedmont
Springs, and being a Massage Therapist myself, but with Kerry's training, ability
to be completely present for the massage and valued skills make him the best
therapist I have uncovered."
Client questionnaires for massage therapy are located in the massage room and
can be returned to the front desk or to me directly. As most of you may know,
Kristen is pregnant and almost full term. She will be taking 3-4 months off
to be with her family. We offer her happiness, love, and all the blessings we
can share to her and her new arrival. We look forward to having her with us
again in the New Year. Kristen, take care of yourself and your new baby. § Jim
Thompson Jr will be taking over Kristen's Friday and Sat slots from 10a-12p
Fitness Facts
It is the time of year when our exercise programs either take a turn for the
better or for the worse. With the Holidays and fall gatherings approaching,
we might have a tendency to stray from our nutritional and exercise regimes.
This year let us keep the words "moderation" and "balance" in our vocabulary.
If we balance our health patterns throughout the year, the New Year will not
bring unwanted stress over starting or restarting a program. Let us also throw
the New Years health resolution out the door and start the fall off with some
old and new ideas to get through our gatherings. Remember that moderation is
the key; now and throughout the Holidays.
Tip of the Month - Nutrition
§ Balance - eat 4-5 small meals a day;
§ Portion control - eat smaller portions and leave your meal feeling a little
hungry
§ Treat ourselves to a good meal or a sweet once a week
§ Eat high fiber - low glycemic foods
§ Eat a little more protein
§ Never skip breakfast - the most important meal of the day
§ Think positive and have fun These guidelines are created through a Lifestyle
change, not from a 'diet' For other tips, strategies, and new and fun exercise
programs. Please call David or Ilene at 531-3300 ext 12.

The fountain of youth is found in the Gym. Are you in search of the fountain
of youth? You can find it in the gym! Scientists have recently discovered that
people engaging in regular physical activity appear biologically younger that
their sedentary living counterparts. The study, published in the January 28
issue of the "Archives of Internal Medicine" sought to determine the effects
on the internal aging system of sedentary living versus physically active living.
Authors measured leukocyte telomere length (LTL) an established marker of aging
in 2,401 white twins and found that those who participated in regular physical
activity had longer LTL than inactive participants. A sedentary lifestyle (in
addition to smoking, high body mass index and low socioeconomic status) has
an effect on LTL and may accelerate the aging process. Another reason to exercise
regularly and stay young!
Potassium builds lean mass. Most people have trouble keeping/or building muscle
mass once they reach middle age. Now researchers at the Tuffs University say
that increasing dietary potassium levels by eating more fruits and vegetable
may help preserve muscle mass in older men and women. At the end of the study,
researchers found that the subjects with higher potassium levels had a higher
percentage of lean mass than those with lower potassium levels. "Higher intake
of foods reach in potassium, such as fruit and vegetables, may favor the preservation
of muscle mass in older men and women," the researchers concluded. In addition
to being low in calories and rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, fruits and
veggies may help protect muscle mass, especially when combined with regular
activity.
On Wednesday, October 29, OHTC will host its annual Halloween Party. Evening
classes will be cancel on this day only. Keep fit and healthy!
