President's Message
Great start in May, huh? The first week was nothing but rain and cold weather.
At least we're experiencing a change for the better the rest of the month. Repairs
are finally finished at the Adult Men's and Women's steam rooms and we are back
up and running. Thanks for all the compliments. Sorry about the delay but, with
all the steam, this is a necessary evil approximately every 5 years. New grids
have been installed in all the pools to bring us up to code. The new grids are
slightly raised, making it impossible to get stuck to the bottom by suction.
It may sound like a trivial matter, but James Baker's granddaughter drowned
in a hot tub and the new law is named after her. James Baker, if you remember,
was on George Bush Sr's cabinet.
The new pool covers have been installed only to find that the winder needs repair
(does it ever end?). One day soon, the pool cover manufacturer will arrive,
take the pool winder, repair it and return it in the same day. Hopefully, there
will be minimal disruption. There is no anticipation that the pools will have
to be closed for this exercise.
Despite cold weather and light use of the club the first week of May, David
and Soo Choi are back in full swing at the snack bar. I heartily recommend their
fare. You might consider a take home dinner; I enjoy their caesar salad and
chicken wrap; Eileen likes their grilled chicken sandwich. Yum!
With Wifi available, more and more members are bringing their computers to the
club. Consider the deck overlooking the bay as your office away from home. Wow,
what a setting!
100 dozen new towels have been ordered in anticipation of the summer rush. Please
help us manage the demand by bringing your own beach towel when using the pool,
there is no way we can keep up otherwise. Sponsor a new member and receive a
months free dues in return. It's our way of saying thanks. Cordially, Oakland
Hills Tennis Club, Inc. Jim Thompson, President

With Summer rapidly approaching, it's time to get your body into the shape you
are looking for. A healthy, strong, and lean body will give you the energy you
need to engage in all those summer activities. A few weeks of training will
not give you what you want, but if you start early enough, you will be able
to make a huge difference in the way your body looks and feels.
A few tips for a new and improved workout routine: If you are just starting,
it is especially important to combine a flexability regimen with your routine.
Stretching takes only a few minutes and you can go a long way in preventing
soreness and injuries. Combine cardiovascular exercise to burn fat with strength
training to build muscle to give you a toned, lean look. You can use different
amounts of cardiovascular time for weight reduction, different weight routines
depending in your goals, specific time allowed for each workout combined with
flexability. While exercise alone can make a difference, you should combine
your routine with a good diet for the best and quickest results. Getting a healthy,
strong, lean body takes time and dedication.
A Personal Trainer can help shape your body, your mind, and your exercise goals
to create the program you want and need.

The Massage Therapist of the month of June is Memie Namkham. She has been with
us for two years. She has become widely popular with modality styles. Her modalities
include:
Swedish - main purpose is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release
toxins in the muscles. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical.
Deep Tissue - to realign deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue - good
for stiff necks, low back tightness, sore shoulders
Thai Massage - it is more energizing and rigorous than more classic forms of
massage. It is also called "Thai Yoga Massage", because the therapist uses her
hands, knees, legs, and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches.
So if you haven't had a massage with Memie or seen her in a long time; come
in and Get-To-Know Memie. For more information on Memie please see the Massage
Bulletin Board in the Hallway or the Weight Room.
Memie Special of the Month of June$60 for 60 minutes With all that life is offering
to us these days, it's a wonder that we can't take a moment and just relax.
Take a break. Why not give yourself a moment of relaxation to help clear the
mind, rest the body, and release toxins. Come in and get yourself a massage.
Our therapists will listen to your wants and needs and offer a caring, energetic,
and restful massage.

Looks like many of our members here at OHTC are participating in our new class
offering: Pilates on Mondays at 4:00 PM. I am pleased with the successful response
for a time slot very new to our schedule. We are now offering 4 Pilates classes
a week with 4 different instructors: each unique in their presentation and technique.
The benefits of Pilates, "Strengthening and Lengthening" as is often described
in two words, are many:
· the ability to gain long, lean muscles improving muscles elasticity and joint
mobility.
· the development of a strong "Core", or center of the body, with flat abdominals
and a strong back
· the creation of an evenly conditioned body in preventing sports injuries.
· the ability to retrain the body to move in safer, more efficient patterns
of motion, invaluable for injury recovery, sport performance, good posture and
optimal health. If you haven' t tried a Pilates class yet, I encourage you to
do. I bet you'll like it! Announcing to our Hip-Hop enthusiasts that Jesse will
start a new dance routine in mid-June. If you are new to Hip-Hop, this will
be a good time to join in. Class is each Wednesday at 6:00 PM. It is lots of
fun. Summer is around the corner. Let's keep active and keep looking good, ready
for our bathing suit. Happy Father's Day!
