President's Message

Happy New Year! 2009 is history, and what a history we experienced - the worst
economic climate since the depression, a major embezzlement, mechanical breakdowns,
seemingly every other week and crisis management in the bookkeeping department.
Somehow, we weathered it all standing on our feet. Thank you for your understanding
and support.
The economy is down. Economic indicators show an anemic future, at least in
the short run (through 2010). Given this bleak forecast, I have decided not
to increase the dues this year - the first time in 34 years. I will continue
to offer an 8.3% discount for a years dues paid in advance, provided it is paid
no later than February 10, 2010 (That's the equivalent of getting a month's
free dues). If you paid a years dues in advance before, you will be automatically
billed again on your February statement; please advise the bookkeeper if you
change your mind.
2010 will have its challenges, too. We're ready! One major change you will experience
first hand is a new front desk check in system called Spectrum. Our former check
in system, CSI, will be greatly enhanced, most notably allowing you to check
your bills and read the newsletter online. It is our hope that this will allow
us greater efficiency in overall communication, keeping you abreast on changes
in real time. We are convinced you will embrace this with enthusiasm. Some training
is required for my staff, so the exact date of transition isn't available, but
the ball is rolling and it should happen soon.
Membership is down. No surprises there because I've kept you informed all along
in this article. However, the club will be more aggressive in its marketing.
The first new offer is a $10,000.00 drawing for members who sponsor new members.
The club will make this drawing on August 1, 2010, at its 35th anniversary party,
provided 100 new members are obtained - that is the goal. If there are less
than 100 sponsored members, the $10,000.00 prize will be prorated depending
on the net number of new sponsored memberships. A display will be set at the
club entrance so you can follow the progress. Full details will be stated on
this display, but for every sponsored new member, members will get an additional
chance for the prize - the more you sponsor, the better the chance of winning.
There will be only one winner of this drawing, although other prizes will be
offered at the anniversary party. Kathy Selleck won a years dues at our 30th
anniversary drawing. She still carries a great big smile on that one. Come on,
Kathy, you can do it again! One benefit of hiring a new bookkeeper was a complete
review of all our records. We discovered that the locker log was not kept accurately.
Thus, we have about 38 lockers available at present. It is a great time to grab
a locker, we're used to having a waiting list. In earlier articles I've mentioned
a private club league. The good news is 11 clubs have signed on, including OHTC.
We're working to bring this together soon, so keep your eyes on this article
in the near future. Marin County already has a private club league in place
and I'm working with Rod Heckleman, owner of Mt. Tam Racquet Club, to see if
we can make a good fit of their program this side of the bay. We're a little
short of two divisions (Alameda & Contra Costa Counties), although we're working
to make that a reality; more divisions to follow, hopefully. There are myriad
reasons for forming a private club league. I expect to hold an town hall meeting
to inform you completely when final details are clear. My staff and I join in
wishing you a Happy and, hopefully, prosperous New Year. We're here to serve
you in the most efficient and professional way possible. Now, lift those weights,
get on that machine, jump into the pool or get on the courts, we're raring to
go! Cordially, Oakland Hills Tennis Club, Inc. Jim Thompson, President

The 2010 tennis season is underway and I hope all players are taking plenty
of time stretching and warming up their bodies in this colder weather. A nice
slow warmup before playing will help keep you on the courts and having fun.
Congratulations to all the club members who moved up in the USTA computer ratings.
The hard work and difficult matches you played have paid off. Keep up the good
work and good luck this season.
Juniors interested in participating in the after school tennis program can find
an application at the front desk. We have kids who range in skills from absolute
beginner to advanced. Beginners and advanced beginners meet on Tuesdays from
4-5:30. We start on February 2nd and meet for ten weeks ($170). Intermediate
to advanced juniors meet on Wednesdays (4-5:30pm) and Fridays starting on February
3rd. This ten week session will cost $190. I want to congratulate our junior
tennis team for their fine season. The team lost a very close match to Laney
for the league championship and finished in fine form.
Panic time for parents. I will be sending out the OHTC summer tennis camp brochures
this month. If you don't get one via email, please let me know and I will get
one out to you. You may contact me at jerryconrad27@yahoo.com. Jerry Conrad

last 30 minutes and be followed by 30 minutes of muscle strength work and stretch.
Zumba is a Latin inspired, dance-fitness class that incorporate Latin and International
music and dance movements.
" It's fun!I Zumba is exercise in disguise. You are having so much fun without
realizing you are exercising.
" It's different! The music, the steps, the moves, the feel...all are like no
other.
" It's easy! Zumba is designed for everyone. Participants of any fitness level,
any background or any age can start Zumba right away.
" It's effective! Zumba is a cardio-based workout with components of resistance/sculpting
training to tone the entire body and achieve any desired fitness goal.
To all dancers out there: Jesse will start a new Hip-hop routine this month.
Join her on Wednesdays at 6:00PM.
Our instructor Sherron Engler is back! Sherron will be subbing for Angelique
for about 6 weeks on Monday at 9:30AM. She will be teaching Total Body Conditioning
: cardio and strenght work.
Nutrition Tip: one cup of orange juice can offer a full day's dose of vitamin
C. But OJ that has been opened loses all antioxidant benefit just after one
week. To get the most vitamin C, buy frozen concentrate and drink within few
days. Frozen concentrate is exposed to less light and air. Best wishes for a
Healthy and Happy New Year! Keep fit.
