President's Message
Summer is about to arrive. It is time to revisit some of our recurring problems and rules.
All guests must be registered immediately upon visiting the club - no exceptions. Each guest must pay a fee and may not use the club more than one time a month. Exceptions apply to guests who live more than 50 miles from the club (check with the front desk for details and available discounts).
Children under the age of 14 are not permitted in the spa anytime - no exceptions. And, children over the age of 5 are not permitted in the baby pool - it is too dangerous.
Please respect the pool rules and our lifeguards, all are there for your safety and the mutual enjoyment of all.
Non-members, especially those taking tennis or swim lessons, are not permitted to linger at the club beyond their lesson. All instructors are to monitor their students and make sure this policy is implemented. When parking, please park compacts in compact parking, regular vehicles in regular parking. Make sure you are parked between the lines and, please, do not park in the handicap parking slots unless you have the proper authorization, even for short stays; sole exception, delivery trucks.
Recently, I wrote about hygiene problems in the workout areas. I personally followed up on two complaints and found that there was no hygiene issue at all - none! When filing a complaint please be sure of your facts. What I did discover is what should be starkly evident and expected; when vigorously working out some individuals emanate a slight odor. This is consistent in every gym in the world! You should not be offended but, if you are unable to cope with the inevitable, please adjust your workout to minimize any discomfort. There are solutions beyond registering an unwarranted complaint.
David and Soo are hard at work in the Snack Bar providing their usual good fare. Their modest prices and great menu are really appreciated. Welcome back!
About the time you receive this newsletter repairs should be underway on our tennis courts. Scheduled for repair are courts 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 10. The contractor who is performing the work, Saviano Co., guarantees against cracking for 2 years. I've got my fingers crossed. Work was delayed by the prolific rains in April. As usual, we will have to learn to live with a little discomfort.
Be advised that two compact parking places on the lower parking lot will be coned off for the resurfacing contractor to facilitate access to the courts. Please respect this adjustment; it is difficult for the contractor to work without this accommodation.
Time is running out to qualify for our 35th anniversary drawing that could reach $10,000.00. Fewer than a dozen recommendations have been made so far, with a goal of 100. Please recommend a new member. We will all be rewarded if you do. Cordially, Oakland Hills Tennis Club, Inc. Jim Thompson, President .

Summer has arrived and I hope your plans are in place. Consider having your child participate in the Oakland Hills summer tennis camp. The camp starts at 10:30 and finishes at 2pm. For those parents who need or want their child to have a longer day, I also have an extended camp from 2:30-4:30. This camp has proven to be a great way to get started in tennis as kids get to play with other kids in a fun, safe environment. There are five two-week sessions to chose from, starting on June 14th. If your family needs to take only one week or would like to break up a session into different weeks, we are fliexible enough to do that. The camp has kids ages 6 to 15 and skills ranging from beginner to intermediate. Pick up a brochure at the front desk or you can go to my website, www.tenniswithjerryconrad.com to download one at your convenience.
Congratulations to all the juniors who participated in the after school tennis program. We had over 50 kids running around the courts and the tennis team was seen every Friday playing competitively with juniors from many of the local tennis clubs. This program will take a break during summer and start up again in September. Junior tennis is a year-round sport at Oakland Hills and as a result, many of the kids have made the jump to high school tennis teams. If your child is interested in tennis during the school year, please see the website for details and applications, or contact me via email at jerryconrad27@yahoo.com or phone 262-9955.

Fitness Facts

The summer weather is hopefully on its way!! So, then, are we ready for warm weather, family and friend getaways, and just being outdoors? Do you feel fit, healthy and strong? Are you frustrated with your current exercise program? Maybe you're stuck in a rut and need a jump-start. Lets take a look on how a Personal Trainer can create a workout program to keep you fit, strong, and balanced throughout the summer.
Here are 3 things that every exercise program should have:
1. Aerobics; - Weight bearing exercises - walking, jogging, jumping rope, and dance-exercise are good forms of aerobic exercise, which is any activity that uses large muscle groups in a continuous, rhythmic fashion for sustained periods of time and during which the individual's body is not supported for some reason. - Non-weight bearing - include bicycling, stationary cycling, swimming, rowing, etc.- Keep your pace comfortable, use the TALK TEST to test your intensity and pace.- 3 - 5 days of aerobic activity for general health and up to 6 days for Weight loss.
2. Strength Conditioning- Calisthenics, free weights, machines - exercises that include every major muscle group, (arms, chest, back, stomach, hips, legs).- Perform 8 - 12 repetitions and gradually increase weight or the number of repetitions.
3. Stretching for Flexibility - proper stretching involves holding a mild stretch for 15 to 30 seconds while you breathe normally. Always warm-up before you stretch. Like strength conditioning, flexibility exercises should include stretching for all of the major muscle groups. And Finally - Always check with your health provider before beginning any exercise program, especially if you are a man over 45, a woman over 55, or have cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease. For more tips, strategies, enhancement of your old exercises program, contact a Personal Trainer. We Are Here For YOU!! Exercise Safely, and Effectively this Summer !!

Massage Messages
David Blaschka
Well, are we relaxed yet? No? Not Yet? Well its time to take a moment for yourself. A soothing, rejuvenating, energizing massage is awaiting you. All you need to do is stop by the front desk or phone the front desk and make an appointment.
A few questions have been asked regarding contraindications in receiving a massage. "Contra" means against, as in contrary, and indications are things that tell you what to do one-way or the other. Therefore, contraindications are issues that are telling you not to do something. There are three different types of contraindications. Local contraindications are areas to be avoided. There are contraindications that require a medical clearance. Absolute contraindications are conditions where you cannot receive a massage.
A massage can be adjusted for local contraindications in several ways. This is an area to be avoided such as the lower leg of a recently sprained ankle. Adjustments may include avoidance of the area, adjusted pressure, shorten massage time, and or adjusting the position the client. A few include, blisters, and bruises, carpel tunnel syndrome, infectious diseases, open wounds, ulcers, sunburns, and many others. There are conditions that will require a medical doctors clearance. A few include: aneurysm, burns, cancer, and congestive heart failure, kidney stones, kidney disease and many, high blood pressure, and many others.
Absolute contraindications maybe temporary or permanent and may require a medical clearance. If you unsure of any health concerns you may have, please speak to you medical professional prior to scheduling a massage. A list of various contraindications will be posted in the Massage Bulletin Board. You may call 531-3300 to make a massage appointment or ask for ext 12 for more information on contraindications
